Hurricane Helene Approaches Taylor County Florida: Evacuations Urged

Hurricane Helene is now forecasted to make Taylor County florida on Thursday evening, according to Governor Ron DeSantis. As the storm approaches, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to stay away from the area until they receive official guidance from the Emergency Operations Office. For those who choose to remain despite the warnings, the Sheriff’s Office has requested that they take precautions to ensure their identification after the powerful Category 4 hurricane passes.

In a post on Facebook, the Sheriff’s Office advised individuals who opt not to evacuate to “PLEASE write your name, birthday, and important information on your arm or leg in a PERMANENT MARKER so that you can be identified and your family notified.” Additionally, residents were asked to email information regarding the number of people and pets in their homes, along with recent photographs, to [email protected].

The post emphasized the dangers of returning too soon, noting the risks posed by heavy flooding and other hazards. “Many roads will be impassable, and there may be downed power lines, fallen trees, and other dangerous conditions,” it warned.

As of Thursday afternoon, Hurricane Helene had intensified into an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm, with sustained winds reaching 130 mph. The storm has been steadily tracking towards the Big Bend region throughout the week.

DeSantis says hurricane models show Helene landfall in Taylor County

“I think you’re looking at anywhere from the Wakulla-Jefferson County line over to Taylor County. Most of the data we have does have a Taylor County florida,” DeSantis stated during a 5 p.m. briefing at the state Emergency Operations Center.

Felicia Bowser, the meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, noted earlier on Thursday that while the forecast path has seen slight adjustments, these changes have been “extremely incremental.” She mentioned that the occasional eastward shifts in the storm’s path are typical.

“We’re definitely getting to that time where the refinements are probably going to be minimized because it looks like it’s on target,” Bowser said, adding that NHC Hurricane Hunter aircraft will continue to gather data to monitor any further changes in the storm’s trajectory.
